FAQ's
What level of surfer is this for?
- Level 3A - Longboard: Designed for our competent long boarders who want to progress, this program runs in 2-4ft gentle rolling waves. With a smaller group size (6 participants) and two coaches per class, you'll receive both in-water guidance and detailed feedback through video analysis. Our goal is to help you master turns, cross-stepping, and nose riding while refining your style and technique.
Our Level 3A will not be running in Summer Waves. We hope to have it return for Autumn Waves in April 2025. - Level 3B - Shortboard: This program is tailored for surfers looking to refine their skills on
shorter boards in 2-4ft waves. With a small group size of six
participants, our session includes 90 minutes of in-water coaching and
30 minutes of group video analysis to review footage from the previous
week. The focus is on mastering foundational techniques, duck dives, top
and bottom turns, and advanced manoeuvres to take your shortboarding to
the next level.
Sundays at 8am with Tora and Becks, starting Feb 9th for 6 consecutive weeks
Please note, if you're interested in different lesson days and times than those listed above, reach out and let us know! We're keeping a list of requested sessions and as soon as we have enough interest for a different time slot to go ahead, we'll add it to our timetable.
Which beach are we surfing at?
We want to make sure you get the most from your sessions, so we choose the beach with the best conditions on the day. You'll receive a message 24 hours before each session with instructions on where to meet us. We have permits to operate at several beaches along the Great Ocean Road, so lessons may be held anywhere between Torquay and Urquharts Bluff.
Which level do I choose if I ride a midlength board?
Choosing the right level depends on your goals and the type of waves you want to ride. If you’re drawn to more gentle, peeling waves and are interested in developing the stylistic elements of midlength surfing—such as smooth turns, flow, and graceful manoeuvres—Level 3A (Longboard) is likely the best fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re ready to challenge yourself on steeper wave faces and are keen to progress towards a shorter board and more dynamic manoeuvres, Level 3B (Shortboard) might be the right choice.
What happens if we have poor conditions on the day?
Surfing is all about adapting to the ocean, and we’re at the mercy of the weather and waves. While we always aim to find the best possible conditions, we can’t guarantee perfect waves for every session (or any session). That said, there’s always something to learn or work on in any conditions—whether it’s refining your paddling technique, improving wave selection, or drilling your turns in the water. Surfing is as much about understanding and adapting to the ocean as it is about catching waves, so every session offers valuable opportunities for growth!
How are you going to help coach me on my specific goals in a group setting?
On booking, you'll receive a short questionnaire to fill out telling us where you're currently at ability-wise, what you want to work on, and what (if anything) may be holding you back. While we do try and group our lessons with similar abilities, if you have a specific goal in mind, we'll do our best to make sure that we specifically cover that off with you throughout the program.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
If you want to paddle out the back, you should be able to comfortably tread water and swim 100-200m unaided, just in case your leg rope snaps and you lose your board.
What happens if I can't make one of the weeks?
We know committing to a 6-week program can be a lot. We'll be running a week of make-up classes at the end of the program for anyone who's missed a session. You can also book into empty spaces that open up throughout the six weeks in other classes to help make up your sessions, however these will be at the lower levels. For our Level 3 programs, we highly recommend that you only book if you think you'll be able to make all six of your original sessions so that the make up week is free in case of poor weather in an earlier week.
REVIEWS FROM PAST ATTENDEES.
"FIVE STARS BABY! This surf camp has been the most fulfilling experience, with Becky being the most kind and supportive teacher. If you are looking to learn anything about surfing, Honu Honi Surf Camp is the place to go. I feel like I’ve now got a lovely surf community on top of having confidence in the waves. Sign up… you won’t regret it!" - Jess, Winter Waves June 2022 (left via Google Reviews).
"I did the 6 week Winter Waves program for complete beginners on Saturday mornings. Don't let the winter weather put you off, when you're in a wetsuit you don't feel the cold - Honi Honu supply them and surfboards or you can bring your own. Becks is a great instructor and the locations are picturesque. The 2-hour lesson duration is perfect and our group was surfing waves from the first lesson. This was just the motivation I needed to get out there and become a regular surfer. Thanks Becks!" - Zenon, Winter Waves June 2022 (left via Facebook Reviews).
"The 6wk winter waves program was great. Not only did I progress to consistently standing up on my board and moving from white wash to paddling for green waves, Honu Honi provide a superior service with quality boards and wetsuits, answering all communications promptly and going over and above providing make up lessons, bonus info and videos on board selection, reading the surf and the list goes on! Highly recommend." - Mairead, Winter Waves June 2022 (left via Google Reviews).
