SUMMER INTENSIVES – PADDLE OUT 1B

2-Day Surf Intensive

$675 / person

ADULTS-ONLY PROGRAM

Please note, all participants must be 18 years + to participate in our programs.

ABOUT

Ready to leave the white water behind? Spend two action-packed days building the skills, confidence and ocean awareness you need to paddle out the back and take the next step towards surfing unbroken waves.

Paddle Out 1B is designed for surfers who are already confident catching and riding white-water waves and are ready to start exploring what happens beyond them.

Across the two days, we'll help you bridge the gap between beginner surfing in the white water and becoming more independent in the lineup. You'll learn how to make your way through the break, understand where to position yourself, navigate a lineup safely and respectfully, and begin catching and riding unbroken waves.

We'll also start developing the skills that become increasingly important as you move out the back, including wave selection, positioning, timing, angled take-offs and beginning to travel along the face of the wave.

With a maximum of just 8 surfers and two instructors across the Intensive, you'll receive plenty of individual attention while learning alongside a small crew of people working towards the same stage of their surfing.

And because progressing as a surfer is about more than what happens during a lesson, your Summer Intensive also includes theory sessions, practical training, access to our Paddle Out video library and a private WhatsApp group for your crew to stay connected and keep surfing together after the Intensive is over.

Our goal? To help you finish your Intensive with the skills, knowledge and confidence to start making the transition from the white water to surfing out the back.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?
  • 4 x scheduled coached surf sessions across two days, with a maximum of 8 participants. We'll adjust session timing where needed to make the most of the conditions available.
  • Two qualified and experienced surf instructors across the Intensive, allowing us to combine in-water coaching with filming, observation and individual feedback.
  • Progressive coaching focused on making the transition from the white water to surfing out the back, including paddle-out techniques, surf etiquette, positioning, wave selection, timing, catching unbroken waves and angled take-offs.
  • Surf theory sessions to help you better understand the lineup, surf conditions, wave behaviour and the decisions you'll need to start making as a more independent surfer.
  • Mobility, surf-specific movement and practical land-based training across the two days.
  • Lunch on both days.
  • Access to our Paddle Out online video library so you can revisit key skills and theory after your Intensive.
  • A private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew, which is yours to keep afterwards so you can organise surfs and continue progressing together.
  • Access to HH Fam exclusive events after completing your Intensive.
  • Surfboard, wetsuit and sunscreen for all surf sessions (you're very welcome to use your own equipment if you prefer).

YOUR 2-DAY INTENSIVE

Your Summer Intensive includes two full days of progressive coaching, generally running from 8am–4pm each day.

DAY ONE

8:00am – Surf Theory

Meet your crew, set your individual goals for the Intensive and prepare for the day ahead. We'll look at the conditions, talk through the lineup and begin exploring the skills and knowledge you'll need to move beyond the white water.

9:00am – Coached Surf Session #1

Hit the water for your first coached surf session, putting the morning's theory into practice with individual feedback from your instructors.

11:30am – Mobility + Reset

A short surf-specific mobility, stretching or movement session to help you recover, reset and get ready for your second surf.

12:00pm – Group Lunch

Lunch is on us! Sit down with your crew and instructors, refuel and chat about how the morning went.

1:00pm – Surf Theory + Coaching Session

Build on what we saw during your first surf with another practical theory and coaching session. We'll break down the areas the group needs to work on and prepare you for the afternoon's session.

2:00pm – Coached Surf Session #2

Back into the water to continue developing your skills, with another coached session and individual feedback.

4:00pm – Finish

6:00pm – Optional Group Dinner

You're invited to join your crew and instructors for an optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner isn't included in your Intensive, so simply order and pay for whatever you'd like.

DAY TWO

8:00am – Surf Theory + Day Two Goals

We'll recap what we learned on Day One, answer questions and identify what you individually need to work on next.

9:00am – Coached Surf Session #3

Head back into the water and continue building on your skills from Day One, with individual coaching based on what your instructors have observed so far.

11:30am – Mobility + Reset

A short recovery and movement session before lunch.

Another group lunch with your crew and instructors, included in your Intensive.

1:00pm – Surf Theory + Coaching Session

We'll dive further into the skills and knowledge you need to continue progressing beyond the Intensive and prepare for your final surf.

2:00pm – Coached Surf Session #4

Your final scheduled coached surf session gives you another opportunity to put everything together, receive individual feedback and identify what to keep working on after your Intensive.

4:00pm – Wrap-Up + What's Next

Finish your Intensive with clear next steps for your surfing, access to your ongoing resources and a crew of new surf buddies to keep progressing with.

A NOTE ABOUT SURF CONDITIONS

The schedule above is our planned structure, but we're surfers and the ocean doesn't work to a timetable.

We'll adjust the timing and order of activities when needed to make the most of the conditions available. For example, if the best surf is first thing in the morning, we may extend an early surf session and move theory or mobility to later in the day.

Surf sessions may be brought forward, extended, shortened or moved to another suitable location. If conditions aren't suitable for safe or productive in-water coaching, scheduled surf time may instead be used for relevant practical coaching such as surf theory, video analysis, surf-skate training, mobility or other land-based training.

Changes to the timetable or the substitution of in-water coaching due to surf or weather conditions do not entitle participants to a refund, credit or make-up session.

FAQS

What level of surfer is this for?

Paddle Out 1B is designed for surfers who are already confident catching and riding white-water waves independently and are ready to begin making the transition to surfing out the back.

You don't need to already be confident paddling through the break or catching unbroken waves — that's what this level is designed to teach you.

We'll work on the skills and knowledge you need to begin navigating the lineup safely and confidently, including paddling out, positioning, surf etiquette, wave selection and catching unbroken waves.

Depending on your individual progression and the conditions available, you'll also begin working on angled take-offs and travelling along the face of the wave.

How do I know if I'm ready for Paddle Out 1B?

You should already be able to confidently catch white-water waves, get to your feet and ride your board with reasonable consistency without an instructor physically assisting you.

You don't need to have mastered turning or unbroken waves yet.

If you're still learning to consistently catch waves, stand up or control your board in the white water, Beginner Transformation 1A will be the better Intensive for you.

If you're unsure which level to book, please get in touch with our team before booking and we'll help you choose the right one.

How big are the groups?

Summer Intensives are capped at a maximum of 8 surfers, with two instructors across the Intensive.

Small groups are an important part of the way we coach at Honu Honi. Rather than simply getting everyone into the water and leaving you to figure it out, we want our instructors to be able to watch what you're doing, provide individual feedback and help you work on the specific things that will make the biggest difference to your surfing.

I've never surfed out the back before. Am I going to hold everyone else up?

Not at all. Learning how to get out the back is the whole point of Paddle Out 1B.

This Intensive is designed specifically for surfers making that transition. You might have paddled out before but struggled to know where to sit or how to catch waves, or you might never have made it beyond the white water at all.

Everyone will progress at a different pace, and our small group size allows us to adjust our coaching to each surfer throughout the Intensive.

Which beach are we surfing at?

We choose our location based on where we expect to find the most suitable conditions for the group. We have permits to operate at several beaches along the Great Ocean Road, so sessions may be held anywhere between Torquay and Urquharts Bluff. We'll send you the relevant meeting information before your Intensive. If needed, we can also help organise carpools between participants.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

Because Paddle Out 1B involves progressing into deeper water and learning to surf out the back, you need to be comfortable in water where you can't stand.

You should be able to comfortably tread water and swim approximately 100–200m unaided in case you ever become separated from your board.

You don't need to be an elite swimmer, but you do need to feel reasonably confident in deeper water.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. Most of our guests come to Honu Honi on their own, and meeting other people to surf with is a big part of the experience.

We'll create a private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew, and the group will remain open afterwards so you can stay connected and organise your own surfs together.

I'm travelling to the Surf Coast. Is accommodation included?

Accommodation is not included, which means you're free to stay wherever suits you and your budget.

Summer Intensive participants can access 10% off accommodation at Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park if they'd like to stay close to town. You're also very welcome to organise your own accommodation elsewhere on the Surf Coast.

If you're staying at the caravan park and won't have access to a car, please let us know and we can assist with transport to and from the day's activities.

Can I get my surf footage from the Intensive?

Yes! Our instructors will be filming throughout the Intensive to help us observe your surfing and provide better feedback.

If you'd like to keep your individual surf footage afterwards, you'll have the option to purchase your clips as an additional extra.

You can also upgrade to a personalised post-Intensive video analysis, where we'll review your surfing with you privately via Zoom and identify the key things we'd recommend working on next.

What happens after the Intensive?

Your surfing doesn't have to finish when the Intensive does.

You'll retain access to your Paddle Out video resources and your crew's WhatsApp group, and you'll become eligible to join our HH Fam exclusive events.

If you're ready to keep progressing with us, you can move into the next appropriate Summer Intensive or join one of our future 6-Week Programs.

What happens if I need to cancel?

You can cancel your Summer Intensive up until 72 hours before the scheduled start time to receive a full refund or transfer your booking to another available Intensive.

Cancellations made within 72 hours of the Intensive start time are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another date. You may transfer your place to another person at no additional cost.

Summer Intensives are delivered across two consecutive days. Missed sessions, late arrivals or portions of the Intensive that you choose not to attend cannot be made up, credited or transferred to another date.

"Becks and her team are the most fantastic crew of dedicated pros - my surfing has improved greatly but I've also learnt so much about board selection, fitness and surf etiquette.
