ABOUT
Know how to paddle out, but nerves keep getting in the way? Spend two days learning to work with your body and nervous system to build confidence, feel calmer in the lineup and rediscover the joy of surfing.
Nurture 2A is designed for surfers who know how to paddle out the back but still feel nervous, hesitant or overwhelmed in unbroken waves.
Across the two days, we'll focus on understanding what happens in your body when fear kicks in, why those responses can make surfing feel harder, and how you can work with them rather than against them. We'll explore the nervous system, hormones and stress responses, and give you practical tools you can use to regulate your body and build confidence in the water.
We'll put it all into practice through four coached surf sessions, focusing on creating positive experiences in smaller, manageable waves and progressively building your comfort out the back.
With a maximum of just 8 surfers and two instructors across the Intensive, you'll receive plenty of individual attention while surfing alongside a small crew working towards the same goal.
And because building confidence takes practice, your Summer Intensive also includes theory sessions, practical training, access to our Nurture video resources and a private WhatsApp group for your crew to stay connected and keep surfing together after the Intensive is over.
Our goal? To have you finish your Intensive feeling calmer, more comfortable and more excited about surfing out the back.
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
4 x scheduled coached surf sessions across two days, with a maximum of 8 participants.
Two qualified and experienced surf instructors across the Intensive, allowing us to combine in-water coaching with filming, observation and individual feedback.
Progressive confidence-building surf coaching focused on becoming calmer and more comfortable surfing out the back.
Surf theory sessions exploring fear, the nervous system, hormones and stress responses, and how these can affect your surfing.
Practical regulation tools and strategies to help you work with your body's responses before and during your surfs.
Mobility, surf-specific movement and practical land-based training across the two days.
Lunch on both days.
Access to our Nurture online video resources so you can revisit key concepts after your Intensive.
A private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew, which is yours to keep afterwards so you can organise surfs and continue progressing together.
Access to HH Fam exclusive events after completing your Intensive.
Surfboard, wetsuit and sunscreen for all surf sessions (you're very welcome to use your own equipment if you prefer).

Your Summer Intensive includes two full days of progressive coaching, generally running from 8am–4pm each day.
DAY ONE
8:00am – Surf Theory
Meet your crew, set your individual goals for the Intensive and start exploring what happens in your body when you feel nervous or overwhelmed in the surf. We'll introduce practical tools to help you work with those responses in the water.
9:00am – Coached Surf Session #1
Hit the water for your first coached surf session, focusing on building comfort, recognising your individual responses and putting the morning's theory into practice with support and individual feedback from your instructors.
11:30am – Mobility + Reset
A short surf-specific mobility, stretching or movement session to help you recover, reset and get ready for your second surf.
12:00pm – Group Lunch
Lunch is on us! Sit down with your crew and instructors, refuel and chat about how the morning went.
1:00pm – Surf Theory + Coaching Session
Build on what we noticed during your first surf, learn more about how your nervous system and stress responses affect your surfing, and develop practical strategies to experiment with during the afternoon session.
2:00pm – Coached Surf Session #2
Back into the water to continue building confidence and putting your new tools into practice with individual support from your instructors.
4:00pm – Finish
6:00pm – Optional Group Dinner
You're invited to join your crew and instructors for an optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner isn't included in your Intensive, so simply order and pay for whatever you'd like.

We'll recap what you learned on Day One, answer questions and identify what you individually need to work on next.
9:00am – Coached Surf Session #3
Head back into the water to continue building confidence and comfort out the back, using the tools and strategies you've developed so far.

Your final scheduled coached surf session gives you another opportunity to put everything together, continue building positive experiences in the water and identify what to keep working on after your Intensive.
4:00pm – Wrap-Up + What's Next
Finish your Intensive with a better understanding of your individual responses, practical tools to keep using, clear next steps for your surfing and a crew of new surf buddies to keep progressing with.
A NOTE ABOUT SURF CONDITIONS
The schedule above is our planned structure, but we're surfers and the ocean doesn't work to a timetable.
We'll adjust the timing and order of activities when needed to make the most of the conditions available. For example, if the best surf is first thing in the morning, we may extend an early surf session and move theory or mobility to later in the day.
Surf sessions may be brought forward, extended, shortened or moved to another suitable location. If conditions aren't suitable for safe or productive in-water coaching, scheduled surf time may instead be used for relevant practical coaching such as surf theory, video analysis, surf-skate training, mobility or other land-based training.
Changes to the timetable or the substitution of in-water coaching due to surf or weather conditions do not entitle participants to a refund, credit or make-up session.
FAQS
What level of surfer is this for?
Nurture 2A is designed for surfers who know how to paddle out the back but still feel nervous, hesitant or overwhelmed surfing unbroken waves.
You may already have the physical skills to get yourself out the back but find that nerves stop you from doing it independently, affect your confidence once you're in the lineup, make it difficult to commit to waves, or simply take some of the enjoyment out of surfing.
This Intensive focuses specifically on building your confidence and helping you become calmer and more comfortable using the surfing skills you already have.
How do I know if I'm ready for Nurture 2A?
You should already have learned the basic skills involved in paddling out and have some experience surfing beyond the white water.
You do not need to feel confident doing it - that's exactly what we're here to work on.
If you're confident surfing in the white water but haven't yet learned how to paddle through the break, position yourself in the lineup or begin catching unbroken waves, Paddle Out 1B will generally be the better Intensive for you.
If you're unsure which level to book, please get in touch with our team before booking and we'll help you choose the right one.
What will we actually work on?
Nurture combines coached surfing with an understanding of what happens in your body when nerves, fear or overwhelm show up.
We'll explore things like your nervous system, hormones and stress responses and, importantly, how that information can help you in the surf.
You'll learn practical strategies you can experiment with before and during your surfs, while your coached sessions give you the opportunity to practise those tools and build positive experiences in the water.
What kind of waves will we surf?
Our aim is to create an environment where you can progressively build confidence rather than simply throwing you into the most challenging conditions available.
Where possible, we'll look for smaller, manageable waves that allow you to practise surfing out the back and challenge yourself without becoming unnecessarily overwhelmed.
The ocean will ultimately determine what's available on the day, and we'll choose the location and structure our sessions around the most suitable conditions we can find for the group.
How big are the groups?
Summer Intensives are capped at a maximum of 8 surfers, with two instructors across the Intensive.
Small groups are an important part of the way we coach at Honu Honi. Rather than simply getting everyone into the water and leaving you to figure it out, we want our instructors to be able to watch what you're doing, provide individual feedback and help you work on the specific things that will make the biggest difference to your surfing.
Which beach are we surfing at?
We choose our location based on where we expect to find the most suitable conditions for the group. We have permits to operate at several beaches along the Great Ocean Road, so sessions may be held anywhere between Torquay and Urquharts Bluff. We'll send you the relevant meeting information before your Intensive. If needed, we can also help organise carpools between participants.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
Because Nurture 2A involves surfing out the back in water where you can't stand, you need to be comfortable swimming in deeper water.
You should be able to comfortably tread water and swim approximately 100–200m unaided in case you ever become separated from your board.
You don't need to be an elite swimmer, but you do need to feel reasonably confident in deeper water.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Most of our guests come to Honu Honi on their own, and meeting other people to surf with is a big part of the experience.
We'll create a private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew, and the group will remain open afterwards so you can stay connected and organise your own surfs together.
I'm travelling to the Surf Coast. Is accommodation included?
Accommodation is not included, which means you're free to stay wherever suits you and your budget.
Summer Intensive participants can access 10% off accommodation at Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park if they'd like to stay close to town. You're also very welcome to organise your own accommodation elsewhere on the Surf Coast.
If you're staying at the caravan park and won't have access to a car, please let us know and we can assist with transport to and from the day's activities.
Can I get my surf footage from the Intensive?
Yes! Our instructors will be filming throughout the Intensive to help us observe your surfing and provide better feedback.
If you'd like to keep your individual surf footage afterwards, you'll have the option to purchase your clips as an additional extra.
You can also upgrade to a personalised post-Intensive video analysis, where we'll review your surfing with you privately via Zoom and identify the key things we'd recommend working on next.
What happens after the Intensive?
Your surfing doesn't have to finish when the Intensive does.
You'll retain access to your Nurture video resources and your crew's WhatsApp group, and you'll become eligible to join our HH Fam exclusive events.
If you're ready to keep progressing with us, you can move into the next appropriate Summer Intensive or join one of our future 6-Week Programs.
What happens if I need to cancel?
You can cancel your Summer Intensive up until 72 hours before the scheduled start time to receive a full refund or transfer your booking to another available Intensive.
Cancellations made within 72 hours of the Intensive start time are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another date. You may transfer your place to another person at no additional cost.
Summer Intensives are delivered across two consecutive days. Missed sessions, late arrivals or portions of the Intensive that you choose not to attend cannot be made up, credited or transferred to another date.
