SUMMER INTENSIVES – PUSH AND PROGRESS 2B

2-Day Surf Intensive

$675 / person

ADULTS-ONLY PROGRAM

Please note, all participants must be 18 years + to participate in our programs.

ABOUT

Confident surfing small unbroken waves and ready to progress? Spend two days refining your positioning and wave selection, generating speed, developing turns, and building the skills to tackle bigger, steeper waves.

Push and Progress 2B is designed for surfers who are already comfortable paddling out, catching unbroken waves and surfing independently in smaller conditions, but are ready to take their surfing further.

Across the two days, we'll focus on the skills that help turn simply catching and riding waves into more intentional surfing. We'll work on improving your positioning and wave selection, using the power of the wave to generate speed, making better use of the wave face and beginning to develop and refine manoeuvres.

We'll also help you understand how your approach may need to change as waves become bigger, faster or steeper, building the foundations you need to progressively challenge yourself in more varied conditions.

With a maximum of just 8 surfers and two instructors across the Intensive, you'll receive plenty of individual attention, feedback and coaching based on what you're actually doing in the water.

And because progression comes from understanding your surfing as well as practising it, your Summer Intensive also includes theory sessions, practical training, access to our Push and Progress video resources and a private WhatsApp group for your crew to stay connected and keep surfing together after the Intensive is over.

Our goal? To have you finish your Intensive surfing with more purpose, a stronger understanding of how to use the wave, and clear next steps for continuing to progress.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

  • 4 x scheduled coached surf sessions across two days, with a maximum of 8 participants. We'll adjust session timing where needed to make the most of the conditions available.
  • Two qualified and experienced surf instructors across the Intensive, allowing us to combine in-water coaching with filming, observation and individual feedback.
  • Progressive surf coaching focused on positioning, wave selection, speed generation, using the wave face, turns and manoeuvres, and developing the skills to surf progressively bigger or steeper waves.
  • Surf theory sessions covering the knowledge and decision-making that support more advanced surfing, including surf etiquette, reading conditions, positioning, wave selection and understanding how to make better use of each wave.
  • Mobility, surf-specific movement and practical land-based training across the two days.
  • Lunch on both days.
  • Access to our Push and Progress online video resources so you can revisit key skills and theory after your Intensive.
  • A private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew, which is yours to keep afterwards so you can organise surfs and continue progressing together.
  • Access to HH Fam exclusive events after completing your Intensive.
  • Surfboard, wetsuit and sunscreen for all surf sessions (you're very welcome to use your own equipment if you prefer).

YOUR 2-DAY INTENSIVE

Your Summer Intensive includes two full days of progressive coaching, running from 8am–4pm each day.

DAY ONE

8:00am – Surf Theory

Meet your crew, set your individual goals for the Intensive and prepare for the day ahead. We'll look at the conditions, discuss positioning and wave selection, and identify the skills we'll be focusing on in the water.

9:00am – Coached Surf Session #1

Hit the water for your first coached surf session. Your instructors will observe your surfing, provide individual feedback, and begin identifying the areas that will make the biggest difference to your progression.

11:30am – Mobility + Reset

A short surf-specific mobility, stretching or movement session to help you recover, reset and get ready for your second surf.

12:00pm – Group Lunch

Lunch is on us! Sit down with your crew and instructors, refuel and chat about how the morning went.

1:00pm – Surf Theory

Build on what we saw during your first surf with another practical theory session. We'll break down some surfing technique, identify individual areas to work on and set clear focuses for the afternoon.

2:00pm – Coached Surf Session #2

Back into the water to put the feedback into practice, with another coached session focused on progressing your individual surfing.

4:00pm – Finish

6:00pm – Optional Group Dinner

You're invited to join your crew and instructors for an optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner isn't included in your Intensive, so simply order and pay for whatever you'd like.

DAY TWO

8:00am – Surf Theory + Day Two Goals

We'll build on what we learned on Day One, answer questions, look at the day's conditions and identify what you individually need to work on next.

9:00am – Coached Surf Session #3

Head back into the water and continue building on your surfing from Day One, with individual coaching based on what your instructors have observed so far.

11:30am – Mobility + Reset

A short recovery and movement session before lunch.

12:00pm – Group Lunch

Another group lunch with your crew and instructors, included in your Intensive.

1:00pm – Surf Theory + Coaching Session

We'll dive further into the skills and knowledge that will help you continue progressing, review what we've seen across your sessions and establish the focus for your final surf.

2:00pm – Coached Surf Session #4

Your final scheduled coached surf session gives you another opportunity to put everything together, receive individual feedback and work on the areas that will have the biggest impact on your surfing.

4:00pm – Wrap-Up + What's Next

Finish your Intensive with a clearer understanding of your surfing, the skills you need to continue developing, clear next steps and a crew of new surf buddies to keep progressing with.

A NOTE ABOUT SURF CONDITIONS

The schedule above is our planned structure, but we're surfers and the ocean doesn't work to a timetable.

We'll adjust the timing and order of activities when needed to make the most of the conditions available. For example, if the best surf is first thing in the morning, we may extend an early surf session and move theory or mobility to later in the day.

Surf sessions may be brought forward, extended, shortened or moved to another suitable location. If conditions aren't suitable for safe or productive in-water coaching, scheduled surf time may instead be used for relevant practical coaching such as surf theory, video analysis, surf-skate training, mobility or other land-based training.

Changes to the timetable or the substitution of in-water coaching due to surf or weather conditions do not entitle participants to a refund, credit or make-up session.

FAQS

What level of surfer is this for?

Push and Progress 2B is designed for surfers who are already confident paddling out, catching unbroken waves, and surfing independently in smaller conditions, generally around 1–2ft.

At this level, the goal is no longer simply to get out the back and catch an unbroken wave. We'll start looking more closely at what you do once you're on the wave and how you can use positioning, timing, speed, and movement to surf it more effectively.

You'll work towards making better use of the wave face, generating speed, developing turns and manoeuvres, and progressively becoming comfortable in bigger, steeper or faster waves.

How do I know if I'm ready for Push and Progress 2B?

You should be able to paddle out independently, position yourself in the lineup, and catch small unbroken waves without relying on an instructor to push you onto them.

You don't need to already have great turns, generate lots of speed or surf challenging conditions - those are exactly the kinds of skills we're here to develop.

If you're still learning how to paddle out and catch unbroken waves, Paddle Out 1B will generally be the better Intensive for you.

If you know how to do those things but nerves or confidence are currently the main thing holding you back, Nurture 2A may be the better fit.

If you're unsure which level to book, please get in touch with our team before booking and we'll help you choose the right one.

What will we actually work on?

The exact focus will vary between surfers because everyone will arrive with different strengths and areas to improve.

Across the Intensive, we'll look at things like your positioning and wave selection, how effectively you're catching and entering waves, where you're looking, how you're using your body, how you're generating and maintaining speed, and how you're beginning to turn and use different parts of the wave face.

We'll use what your instructors observe in the water and on video to identify the areas that will make the biggest difference to your individual surfing.

Do I need to know how to turn already?

You should be comfortable catching and trimming along small unbroken waves, and changing direction left and right, but you don't need to arrive with established manoeuvres.

For some surfers, this Intensive may be about learning how to generate speed and beginning to develop more intentional turns. For others, it may be about refining turns they're already attempting and starting to link movements together more effectively.

Your instructors will work with the surfing you arrive with and identify the appropriate next steps for you.

Do I need to be comfortable in bigger waves?

No. You should be confident surfing small unbroken waves, but you don't need to already be comfortable in bigger or more powerful conditions.

Part of Push and Progress is developing the skills, understanding and confidence that allow you to progressively tackle more challenging waves as your surfing improves.

We'll always choose the most appropriate conditions available for the group rather than putting you into surf that is beyond your current ability.

How big are the groups?

Summer Intensives are capped at a maximum of 8 surfers, with two instructors across the Intensive.

Small groups are an important part of the way we coach at Honu Honi. Rather than simply getting everyone into the water and leaving you to figure it out, we want our instructors to be able to watch what you're doing, provide individual feedback and help you work on the specific things that will make the biggest difference to your surfing.

Which beach are we surfing at?

We choose our location based on where we expect to find the most suitable conditions for the group. We have permits to operate at several beaches along the Great Ocean Road, so sessions may be held anywhere between Torquay and Urquharts Bluff. We'll send you the relevant meeting information before your Intensive.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

Because Push and Progress 2B involves surfing out the back in water where you can't stand, you need to be comfortable swimming in deeper water.

You should be able to comfortably tread water and swim approximately 100–200m unaided in case you ever become separated from your board.

You don't need to be an elite swimmer, but you do need to feel reasonably confident in deeper water.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. Most of our guests come to Honu Honi on their own, and meeting other people to surf with who are a similar level to you is a big part of the experience.

We'll create a private WhatsApp group for your Intensive crew (optional to join), and the group will remain open afterwards so you can stay connected and organise your own surfs together.

I'm travelling to the Surf Coast. Is accommodation included?

Accommodation is not included, which means you're free to stay wherever suits you and your budget.

Summer Intensive participants can access 10% off accommodation at Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park if they'd like to stay close to town. You're also very welcome to organise your own accommodation elsewhere on the Surf Coast.

If you're staying at the caravan park and won't have access to a car, please let us know and we can assist with transport to and from the day's activities.

Can I get my surf footage from the Intensive?

Yes! Our instructors will be filming throughout the Intensive to help us observe your surfing and provide better feedback.

If you'd like to keep your individual surf footage afterwards, you'll have the option to purchase your clips as an additional extra.

You can also upgrade to a personalised post-Intensive video analysis, where we'll review your surfing with you privately via Zoom and identify the key things we'd recommend working on next.

What happens after the Intensive?

Your surfing doesn't have to finish when the Intensive does.

You'll retain access to your Push and Progress video resources and your crew's WhatsApp group, and you'll become eligible to join our HH Fam exclusive events.

You'll also finish with a clearer understanding of the areas to keep working on in your own surfing.

If you're ready to keep progressing with us, you can join another appropriate Summer Intensive or one of our future 6-Week Programs.

What happens if I need to cancel?

You can cancel your Summer Intensive up until 72 hours before the scheduled start time to receive a full refund or transfer your booking to another available Intensive.

Cancellations made within 72 hours of the Intensive start time are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another date. You may transfer your place to another person at no additional cost.

Summer Intensives are delivered across two consecutive days. Missed sessions, late arrivals or portions of the Intensive that you choose not to attend cannot be made up, credited or transferred to another date.
